Binh Quoi Tourist Village: a haven for harried city dwellers
By: Published:2008-03-31 13:54:36
A relaxing venue outside the hustle and bustle of HCM City, Binh Quoi Tourist Village has been a well-loved site of tourists and locals alike, including one of the country’s most famous musicians
This year, the annual concert to honour Trinh Cong Son will take place at Binh Quoi, which provided inspiration for the late composer and his colleagues.

The concert to celebrate the seventh anniversary of Son’s death will be held at the village’s meeting club set up by Son and located on the Thanh Da Peninsula 8km from downtown. Ngoi Ben Hien Nha (Sitting under the House’s Eaves) is this year’s theme.

Built in 1994, the tourist village was set up by the Sai Gon Tourist Corporation (Saigontourist) on the banks of the Sai Gon River in Binh Thanh District.

Covering an area of 34,635sq.m, the tourist area, the largest in HCM City, resembles a real village and is sometimes called "little Hawaii" by people living in the city.

Dotted with trees, the village is lined with brick-paved paths. Small wooden piers are placed near a pond full of lotuses and water lilies, a bamboo bridge covers a small canal, and hidden cottages can be seen under old bamboo hedges. Loofah trellises adorned with bright yellow flowers and rich fruit cover the area.

Large spaces of green grass and rows of coconut trees are reflected in the So Nhat Canal, creating a peaceful, quiet and verdant space.

Fifty-five modern hotel rooms in the trees’ shadows can be rented for visitors who would like a break from the frenetic pace of the city.

The Hoa Mua restaurant with many Vietnamese specialties and international cuisine is often used for parties and receptions of different sizes. Grilled dishes are considered to be the most delicious on offer.
Located near the river where soft cool breezes blows, the romantic restaurant features candlelight dinners with lanterns strung from trees and wild orchids.

The buffet Khan Hoang (Breaking Fresh Ground), with 70 local dishes, is offered on weekends.

Popular country dishes including banh xeo, banh khot, bun mam, ca loc nuong trui, and bun thit nuong are served by men and women in ao ba ba (Vietnamese silk blouse).

Folk music performances are held at night and the site often hosts traditional wedding parties. Water-skiing, fishing, tennis and swimming are also available in the tourist village.

Hoi Ngo Quan is a structure established by the composer Son in 1999 after he visited the tourist village and was fascinated with its charm. Son and his fellow musicians, singers and friends met and discussed issues related to music, painting, prose and verse.

Son’s belongings in the club including portraits painted by himself, pieces of music and photos. It is the site where lovers of Son’s music and his friends come to visit and remember the composer.

Binh Quoi II

Another village, Binh Quoi II, is about 400m away from the main area, covering 25,380sq.m and surrounded by the Sai Gon River.

The resort mimics the look of an ancient village’s traditional festival with lanterns, a small peaceful river and small boats.

Binh Quoi II is great for families, and contains a swimming pool, tennis yards, fishing ponds and guesthouses.

Some tourists like to cruise along the Sai Gon River on junks during their stay here. They can stop at the famous Lai Thieu Orchard, the Nha Rong Wharf with its revolutionary relics, the Ben Duoc Temple or the historic guerrilla underground tunnel.

Small boats loaded with fruits, vegetables and traditional cakes can be seen at the riverside, calling on visitors to taste and buy.
